The Wicca Calendar is very festive and enjoyable! Enjoy each book you find about Wicca and Witchcraft as they each share a little bit different explanation about the Holidays and festivals, although the meaning is the same. Some of us are better at descriptions than others, and the more you read, the more wealthy with knowledge you become!
There are many Holidays and festivals that Wiccans celebrate throughout the year. These Holidays are based on the changing of the seasons, and how it relates to daily life. There are eight all together.
The movement of the seasons and all that it encompasses provides a very sacred life for Wiccans, as the Mother Earth is our most treasured existence! Our Holidays and Festivals are a huge part of what we live for, as life itself revolves around the care and feeding of all in nature!
Samhain, Halloween–October 31
Time for the Witches Ball! This is celebrated as the Wiccan New Year, as well as a time to remember loved ones passed, this is a time when the fragile veil between our world and the other side is at its thinnest. This is a Witches time to honor departed loved ones and celebrate the lives of ancestors. This is often called the “feast of the dead”. This is a wonderful time to celebrate with a special dinner. It is also a great time to throw a festive party! This Holiday can be celebrated in both solemn remembrance or a celebration of the New Year on the wheel of life!
Yule, Winter Solstice–December 21
Yule is a joyous celebration as the Goddess gives birth to the Sun God. Candles are lit to welcome him and family & friends celebrate with gift giving, love and decorations! The Sun Gods light returns. This is a time of sharing warmth, Love and Peace!
Imbolc– February 2
This is the time when spring begins to slowly peek out with its tiny greenness showing itself in the way of seedlings, and buds starting to appear on bushes and trees. After a long winter, the sun grows & starts to show its strength in rays of golden light, giving hope for a plentiful season ahead.
Spring Equinox, Ostara March 21
This is the beginning of Spring! Courtships begin, as trees start to barely blossom. Fertility starts to gently peek out and into bloom. A time welcoming warmth and balance! Energies within start to ingnite!
Beltane– May 1
Spring is in full bloom! Gather flowers! The young maiden and Goddess have become fertile and celebrate the joy of transformation and rebirth. Sexuality is in the air and this is a wonderful time to celebrate! The energies of Nature are before us! Love is in the air! There is much reason to Dance and Cheer!
Litha, Summer Solstice–June 21
The God & the Goddess have mated and the longest day of the year is upon us as summer is empowering all of Nature to the fullest! As Wiccans and Witches we celebrate fertility, growth and fruitfulness. Handfastings begin to take place! All hearts are warm with the heat of the season.
Lughnasadh–Lammas, Feast of bread. August 1
Witches and Wiccans break bread together as the beautiful plants and trees of spring pass on. It is a time to harvest all that has been given by Nature as seeds fall from trees to bring harvest for the next cycle.
The harvesting season that began with Lughnasadh is now complete as the long days subside, becoming equal to night. Nature slows and prepares for winter. For it is time to rest. This, a time to celebrate the final harvest with fruits, bread, and thankfulness.
Mabon, or Fall Equinox
On approximately September 21st the second harvest of the three harvest festivals. Mabon concentrates on fruits and vegetables.
As you can see, all of the seasons are rich with reasons to celebrate! Without all the wonders of changing weather and the crops that come with it, we probably would not exist. Our earth is rich in fresh foods and nourishment that must be given constant attention and planning that we often forget about, as most everything can be found in the modern day supermarket!
Please enjoy the seasons and changes within your Wicca Calendar!
