A Book of Shadows or Grimoire is a valuable Witches tool. This is a Book that starts blank until you write down any information in it that you find meaningful to you as a Witch, or that is important or useful to you.
It is best to look for one that you can easily add pages to, as you will continue to add information regularly. You will also be drawing pictures in it, so choose one that has no lines.
As your Book of Shadows grows, over time so does it’s power. Write in it when you are alone with yourself, for you will continue to put more and more of yourself into it. It is important to keep it away from prying eyes or very young hands. You want it to grow with YOUR vibrations.
This will be YOUR Book of Magick, and it is very powerful! Remember:
- Your Book of Shadows MUST be handwritten
- It is for your eyes only
- Treat it with complete respect
Things to include in your Book:
- Spells
- Incantations
- Rituals
- Information about power
- Gods & Goddesses used
- Symbols
- Pictures & Drawings
If you’re in a coven, you will want to put any information and lessons about it as well as it’s workings
Records of Spells you have performed and how they turn out should be included, even if they didn’t work. Any Magickal experiences that you feel are important as well as charts, moon phases and other correspondences should be included.
BLESS YOUR BOOK FOR PROTECTION
It makes no difference what your Book looks like as long as you take good care of it. You may wish to have a protective purification ceremony which invokes Thoth, the Egyptian God of Books and writing to continue to watch over your Book of Shadows.
Do not hesitate to include every little detail about your Spell work in your Book. This includes:
- The time of day
- The moon phase
- The where, who, when & why’s
- All ingredients used
- Which Gods or Goddesses were invoked
- The results
Put what ever else you feel like in your Book, and by all means make it FUN, and make it beautiful, for it is sacred and it is your own Book of Shadows! As time passes you will glance back in time at things you may have put into your book of shadows in the years past, but please do not attempt to change anything. I know you will have learned a great deal and feel the need to repair or improve what you started in your special book, but please, look upon it with pleasure and joyous improvement as you would the growth of a child!
